Who are we?

EcoOcean is an environmental organization established in order to save the Mediterranean from its continuing deterioration.

When was EcoOcean established?

EcoOcean was established in 2002 by a group of marine biologists and sea lovers.

Why?

We are here to protect the sea, which is being threatened by human activity. At least 50% of the oxygen we breathe is created by photosynthesis that occurs in the sea. If photosynthesis by algae would be undermined, the quantity of oxygen in the atmosphere would substantially decrease.

What is our guiding concept?

Each one can contribute to protecting the sea by reducing the use of plastic and avoid leaving waste on the beach and by never driving on the beach with a car or a jeep. We could also improve the quality of our coastal environment by participating in clean-ups, environmental campaigns and other activities in order to influence others, not only kids but also grown-ups!

Where do our activities take place?

We invite you to visit us at "Megalim", our visitors' center at Kibutz Sdot Yam.

What is the "Megalim" Center?

The "Megalim" Center in Kibutz Sdot Yam is an educational visitors center for marine environmental issues operated by us. School students visit the center for a activity, which focuses on familiarizing students with the Israeli Mediterranean coastal environment, human impacts, and possible solutions for reducing these environmental impacts. Another type of activity we conduct at Megalim is research activities, as part of Biotope and Ecotope studies or other environmental education programs. One of the most important outcomes of Megalim is providing students with tools for contributing to the preservation of the marine environment in Israel.
